Title: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 03, 2015, 06:50:48 AM
Hi everyone!  I was a part of this forum about 4 years ago and then my tank crashed and I didn't have the heart to get it going again until just recently. I have a 75g with a 40g breeder sump/refugium.  My tank just finished cycling and I have my first fish in QT.  I was going to go FOWLR, but I just recently won a Neptune DOS & DDR, so looks like I'm going to step up my game and get some corals sooner than I planned.  I need to get and Apex controller and I will be ready to go! I'm hoping to connect with some local reefers.  Is the club still having meetings?  If so, I would love to join in!

Thank you, that would be so nice! I don't have anything to share yet, but hopefully I will in time. Do you know if there are very many people still in the club, I would love to join? Do you have pictures of your tank? I would love to see it? I'm going to start a thread and post what I have so far!  Which is not much!!!

I have 3 Halloween hermits, a Pom Pom crab, snails, zebra hermits, micro stars, Asterina stars, pods & various worms!  I have two purple Firefish in QT right now.  I should be able to add them to my tank in about 2 weeks!  Kind of bare bones right now!

It looks great I like the rock work and what I would do is put some mushrooms and zoas and a rose bubble anemone with some clowns and I would add some purple tech by Kent Marine and that should start your coralline algae. And also if you have a refuguim I would add some chetomorpha and flame macro algae. Then add some phytoplankton to get your copepods going but I Like your system and when its ready in a couple months for lps and sps  I'll frag you some.

Thank you and the frags would be awesome!  I have a 40g breeder with about a 12g refugium.  I have Chaeto in there, but no flame macro (not quite sure what that is) and I added phyto when I added my pods. Glad I'm doing things right.  I added some plates with coralline on it, but I think I will also try the purple tech.  Can we get that locally or does it need to be ordered online? Thanks!!!

Here's a picture of my sump.  This was from 4yrs ago, everything looks pretty much the same now except for the rock, It's like the rock in the DT!

oh and if u want to learn more about anything about reefing go check out bulk reef supply on youtube.

I'm subscribed to their You Tube channel!  Their video's are definitely helpful!  I'm trying to learn about dosing, it's going to be awhile before I need to, but I saw that they have a video on it and as soon as I get a chance I'm going to check it out.  The Neptune DOS/DDR system that I won should have shipped out today, I need to learn how to use it. As of right now I certainly don't!

they have videos about basically everthing and if u need help programming your Neptune doser go to their website and click on the live chat in the upper left corner.

I'm going to be in Spokane next week.  Do you know anything about the fish stores up there?  Thanks!

Thank you!  I will do that!
Title: Aquatic Dreams
Post by: fraggy on November 11, 2015, 10:54:02 PM
Note that Aquatic Dreams moved from Post Falls when it was sold and is not easy to find in Spokane.  There are at least two other saltwater stores there, none of them that great from a live stock perspective in my experience.  You may be better buying frags from hobbiest.  The Petcos up there have better live stock than the locals in my experience.
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 12, 2015, 06:18:19 AM
I think I went there once, if I remember right it's kind of in a warehouse district. Petco's fish tanks in Richland are full of ich, I don't know if I could ever bring myself to buy any livestock from there in fact I'm pretty sure I won't!  I'll be in the Tri-Cities next week, so I'm going to go check out the Fish Guy!  I'll probably get a few Zoa's this weekend in your experience with the 2 stores in Seattle have you had any problems with flat worms, ich etc...  I'm going to dip everything, I'm just trying to decide if I'm going to quarantine them. Thanks!  Maybe, one day we'll be able to organize a frag swap with people from our area and by that time I might even have something to share! It would be great to see the club start up again!
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: reefjosh on November 12, 2015, 11:00:18 AM
the oceans and barrier are absolutely the best stores ive ever been to by farrrrrr! and they use bayer insect killer to dip all corals they have so they don't have any pests and their fish systems have copper so theirs no ick and whats awesome is they have a 15 day warranty and also they quarantine everything for 2 weeks before they put it in the main systems.
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 12, 2015, 11:18:09 AM
Thank you very much!  My fish are still in QT and won't be able to go into my DT until Sunday, so I think that I will just dip my corals check for any eggs and put them in!
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: reefjosh on November 12, 2015, 11:28:36 AM
I would use some bayer dip the ratio is 250ml per gallon of the blue and silver bottle of bayer.
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 12, 2015, 11:31:58 AM
Thank you!  I have some coral RX pro, wish I had known about the Bayer beforehand!
Title: Re: Back again!

coral rx is still a great dip
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 12, 2015, 11:58:18 AM
Yeah, just a bit more expensive than Bayer.

Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 15, 2015, 11:20:07 AM
Well, we had a great time in Seattle.  I came back with 5 Zoa's, 3 paly's, 1 Clove polyp, 1 GSP(my husband wanted this, it's going on the glass) and 1 Sympodium.  I dipped everything in the Coral Rx Pro and a bunch of stuff died off, but there is some kind of slug that survived, I think it might be some kind of Nudi, I'm waiting for an ID.  My clove poly is infested with them, there are also some kind of egg casings, I assume they are from the slug.  I've picked off at least 6 slugs and 10 egg casings.  I decided to place everything into a QT just so I could check everything out better.  I'm sure glad that I did!

Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: reefjosh on November 15, 2015, 08:14:14 PM
the first one is probably a slug
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 15, 2015, 08:45:28 PM
I just got an ID from someone on RC, they think it's an Arminid Nudibranch, clove polyp eating.  I've been manually removing them and the egg casings.  I'm going to do a freshwater dip tomorrow to try and get rid of any babies!  I don't want these in my tank!!!
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: reefjosh on November 17, 2015, 09:55:25 AM
what you do is get some bayer and let it sit for 15 minutes then use a turkey baster and blow the crap out of the coral and make sure u get every inch of the coral.
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 17, 2015, 10:32:53 AM
I'll be in town tomorrow and Bayer is on my list.  I'm thinking about cutting it apart as I keep finding egg casings!  I'm just not sure how to do it, can I just pick a spot between the cloves and cut? It doesn't have much rock on the bottom of it.  I don't want to kill it!  I did a freshwater dip yesterday morning and then after the lights when out I saw another Nudibranch and removed it! These are tough little suckers, I'm about ready to Nuke it!!!  I couldn't believe all of the junk that come off of it when I used the turkey baster in the FW dip.

Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: reefjosh on November 17, 2015, 10:36:34 AM
idk if it wasn't to expensive I wouldn't put it in your display at all I would just keep it in quarrintine for awhile and keep dipping and bastering it until you don't see any bugs.
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 17, 2015, 10:43:28 AM
That's the plan, I'm not putting it in there until I'm confident that they are completely eradicated! I just thought that separating it at the places where the polyps are so tight together would allow me to be more successful in killing them all off!

if you have the money I would recommend you using the Zeovit system because it has some awesome coloration and health of corals but it comes at a cost.

I'll have to look that up, I'm not familiar with it!  If I had the money, I'd have a better tank! :)   It's seriously scratched up!

That's for sure!

So are you thinking about using Zeovit?  I probably won't at this time as I'm trying to acquire some new equipment for my setup and I'm hoping to get a new tank somewhere down the road!

Im just going to use the red sea sea coral program
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on November 23, 2015, 04:07:24 PM
So, are there just different red sea products that you add.  I didn't really know that there were coral programs available.  I thought it was just parameters and good lighting.  Learn something new every day!

yeah now they have trace elements and foods and fatty acids and amino acids. I buy everything exept the calcium and alkalinity because the bulk reef supply cal and alk is only 11 bucks and it makes a gallon of cal and alk
Title: Re: Back again!

I would buy this red sea package that has every thing or buy these two things and the brs alk and cal powder which you just dissolve in rodi water http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/red-sea-coral-package.html or

I'm really interested to see what kind of results you get or are you already using them!  On another note, I think I'll be placing my coral in the tank next week.  I was going to do it this week, but with Thanksgiving coming up, I won't really have time. I'm going to take the frags off of the plugs and glue them to the rock in my tank, so I'm a little nervous about that.  The guy at the fish store gave me some tips and I've been watching videos.  Hopefully, I won't destroy anything.  I have a large rock with a colony of Devils Armor Zoa's on it, I think that I'm just going to place the whole thing in the tank.  I should have some frags to share one of these days!

I'll check those out!

Post by: reefjosh on November 23, 2015, 05:52:53 PM
haha well I hope your corals do well and ive been using the red sea coral colors and reef energy and brs cal alk mix for months and loved it but ive been using salinity salt and phyotoplankton but I think the red sea salt is very nice and I would strongly advise that you should buy the red sea no3 and no4 reducer because it reduces nitrates and phosphates also makes your water crystal clear and gives your coral better coloration because I have a red planet sps that was just red but when I used the reducer it made it vibrant red and green and pink tips so that's what I do.

what type of bulb are you using on your refugium
Title: Re: Back again!

I'm using a 6500K LED.  I used a 6500K CFL before, but couldn't find one, my Chaeto grew like crazy, it seems to be doing just as well with the LED!

Hi Jacob! I have something to share with you. You offered to share some LPS with me and I was hoping that I would eventually have something to share with you. Would you be interested in a frag from the Cespitularia that I got from Todd. I have a group of 3 and it looks like another one is starting to grow. Let me know!  Also I'm getting ready to harvest the Chaeto in my sump, can you use any?
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: reefjosh on December 14, 2015, 11:21:23 PM
yeah sure I have a nano reef that could use some a frag of that and sure cheto would be cool and since I put the bulb on its growing pretty good now and even growing since im use red seano4 and no3 reducer which is carbon dosing which macro algae shouldn't grow at all but it is!!!
Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on December 15, 2015, 08:40:18 AM
Good, I'm glad you have a spot for one. I'll let you know when I'm going to be in town and I'll bring it and a bag of Chaeto.  So, can I just cut it with scissors like xenia, I watched a video on that. How long should it heal before I try and bring it to you?  Did you find a 6500k bulb then?  I get great growth with mine. It's funny, you're having to reduce your NO3 and I'm having to dose to raise mine.  Hopefully as I get more fish I will be able to stop dosing for it.

Hi Jacob. Todd and I are going to get some baby bristle stars from a guy on R2R. Would you be interested in getting some? Here's the cost 10-20 25 cents each

30-50 20 cents each  50+ 15 cents each and shipping will be 41$ overnight to my place. I've already asked for 40, but I might be able to get more if you want some too!

I was just told that the shipping had gone up $5 & $10 respectively, so we might wait until after Christmas to see if it goes back down.  I will let you know!

Title: Re: Back again!
Post by: drstratton on December 16, 2015, 07:55:37 AM
I just looked the Acropora and bonsai up, beautiful!  What color is your Goniopora?  Barrier Reef is where I bought the Clove Polyp that had all of the Nudibranchs and egg casings on it.  Make sure you check your Goniopora closely!  My schedule is kind of crazy right now, so if you don't mind I'm going to wait until after the 1st of the year to frag the Cespitularia. I will definitely get it and the Chaeto to you sometime after the 1st.  Todd is checking into a different place for the stars, if the place has them, the shipping will be $19.  I'll let you know!

Good morning Jacob!  I hope you had a great Christmas and fun New Year!  My Cespitularia fragged itself, well it sent off a small shoot that then separated from the main group, so it is growing really well.  I just contacted the guy about the starfish, hopefully the shipping has gone back down. I don't know if you got the message I sent to you about starting a FB group for E WA, I'm hoping that we can connect with more people.  We are still planning on having a frag swap, I just don't have a date yet.  As soon as I hear about the starfish I'll let you know, then we can figure out when and where to meet so that I can get the Cespitularia, chaeto and starfish to you!
