January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

I have finished converting my recent club made phosban reactor into a nitrate reactor. The pump I used is a maxi jet 400, and the media is sulphur and calcium carbonate. The unit takes a couple of weeks to cycle and then it will start removing nitrates from my tank. I started with nitrates of 50 ppm. I will post some updated numbers in about 3 or 4 weeks when I see results.

Thanks again to all those that made the club meeting reactor project possible.

Robert,

That looks interesting, where did you find the information on what media to use? and where did you find the media?

Thanks

I did a pretty exhaustive search on the web and read everything I could on sulphur denitrification. I bought my sulphur from www.midwestaquatic.com. My design is copied from the one that Midwest Aquatic sells and the Korallin BioDenitrator. The smaller of those retail units treat 50-250 gallons. They use about 5 lbs of sulphur. My unit is 1/5th the size, which should work fine on my 58 gallon tank, and it uses 1 lb of sulphur. I have adjusted my drip rate accordingly. I ran the unit wide open for 24 hours to establish the bacteria. Then I set the unit to drip 1 drop every 5 seconds for the next 72 hours. I now have it set to 3 drops every 5 seconds. As of yesterday the effluent was already reading 2.5ppm.

Wow that is pretty neat.  I can't wait to see what it does in a couple of weeks.  Keep us posted and thanks for sharing!

Robert,

That is great news.  Thanks for sharing your results with us.  Hopefully if someone else is experiencing a high nitrate issue, you can help out. You have sure taken care of your nitrates.

How about some pictures of your tank.  All we have seen is the sump.

Thanks
