April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

What I did was just brush the hair algae off my rock as best as I could and filled up a garbage can with water and put alot of bleach in it. (I guess you don't really need alot, but I didn't know it) Roll Eyes    then I put the rock in and let it soak for I think a day or so. After that, I took it out and laid it on my patio and took the hose to it several times over a few days. Then, I just put it back into my tank a piece at time day after day until it was all back in. I am sure there is a better and more appropriate way, but.....it seemed to work ok. For a while anyway. Now, I will probably have to do it again when I get my new skimmer back from Rick. Are you having "issues?'

Be warned that this will KILL the rock.  You will have even harder time keeping the algae at bay by doing this, as all of your bacteria will have to start from scratch again, meaning you will have higher nutrient levels in the tank to feed the algae.  We had best luck with getting rid of problem algae by dropping to 1 hour of MH lights a day for a week.  We cut down to about 5 hours on the Actinic's as well.  Basically, if you can remove any one of the things needed for the algae to survive, you can get it to crash.  Carmen, with you guys not having coral or fish in the tank yet, you can probably just eliminate light all together for a few days and see if it helps.

Take the rock out and nuke it in the microwave for a few seconds (15 or so).  Then put it in a tub with a skimmer and no lights for a week with water changes every two days.  This should help too and you add no chemicals to the tank.

Carmen,
They are both right! My rock was dead and I had to start all over. Which is probably why I am in that same situation again! I don't have metal halides only PC's. I am hoping with my new skimmer and those nudis I can get it whipped for good this time!

I should have been more specific but we have live rock in the tank and there were a couple of chunks that we wanted to bleach because they are nasty looking.

Thanks for all the tips.......this is too much fun.
