Nano for the office

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.  
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.

So here's the office nano tank at the moment.  The stony corals will be moving up soon, I just habitually add things to the bottom and move up after a week or so.  The flow in there is enough to keep things blowing around, and I'm hoping the light will be enough for the montipora.  It's only 24W of T5 lighting, but at 4" from the light to the coral I think it'll be pretty bright.

Also looking at adding some fish to keep the eyelash blenny company.  Probably a clown of some sort and a colorful goby.
Also need better sand cleaners, though not sure which will be most suitable for the coarse sand.

The reeftopia eyelash blenny has been hanging out on John's purple digitata since I put it in.  He thinks it's a nice centrally-located perch from which to survey his kingdom.  Little does he know that I'm going to rearrange everything and add another fish or two.

This guy changes color a lot.  Down on the sand he turns white; on top of the rocks he's speckled, in among the coraline he's purple.

Here it is today, after a bit of rearranging and the gradual addition of many critters.  It's hard to get a good picture without any glare in the office.  I should probably try taking pictures in the evening with the room lights off.

The Royal Gramma mostly hangs on the top and sides, and the clown mostly hangs out in front.  The eyelash blenny has tried to bully everything in the tank, but has mostly given up on the new fish.  Poor guy.  He's still out in the open about 50% of the time, though.

I'm experimenting with different foods and amounts.  It's hard to decide for a tank this small.  The blenny eats everything.    The Royal Gramma tastes everything he finds in the water column.  The clown is more picky.  What do you feed your clowns?

My clowns tried to be picky, but I just kept feeding New Life Spectrum and hunger must have gotten the better of them because they just started chowing down on it today.  I was starting to get a little worried and was going to get a hold of some brine shrimp tomorrow, but now it's not an issue.  Mysis shrimp and brine shrimp should get your clown to eat I think.

I feed my clowns and most everything else New Life Spectrum.  It is nice because it is a slow sinking pellet so everyone gets to eat and it does not go out the overflow.

I decided to ask here when he wouldn't even eat the mysis.

I haven't tried New Life Spectrum; I'll have to look for that.  I know the clowns I got from Elmo (Seattle) love the veggie pellets I supplement their diet with, but they haven't been picky at all and happily nab anything that floats within range of their anemone.

Jeff, how long did it take for yours to eat?

I got my clowns on Saturday and they ate on Monday.

most fish like frozen brine shrimp

The clown fish eventually started eating the frozen along with everyone else.  Unfortunately I had a filter clog one weekend and came in to find all of the fish dead or dying.  Such is the way of an overstocked nano. 

Since then I've changed the media a bit to make it less easy to get clogged.  No fish have lived in it for several months now, but I'm going to pull out the remaining stony coral (the euphyllia in the lower left corner) and put in dwarf seahorses next week.  They're eating fresh hatched brine shrimp nauplii of course.
