January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

My wife gave me a self-contained nano cube for Christmas, and I set it up at work with live rock, etc. from one of my tanks at home.

I believe it is this 12 Gallon model from Costco: http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11169083

I'm already cleaning tube worms off of the acrylic and copepods seem to have successfully hitched a ride on the rocks.

So now the question is what do I put in this tank?  Rick almost had me convinced to do seahorses, but I don't think I want the maintenance overhead on this tank, especially since I'm away from it two days a week.  There's the classic anemone with a clown and maybe a shrimp and blenny/gobi.  It's a bit too small for schoolers, predators, or tangs I think.

Any other ideas?

Here's a picture of the tank as it currently exists:

Add some zoos, an anemone, a lone clown, and a cleaner shrimp.  You will have to do water changes weekly in my opinion and top off daily.  You could also do some ricordeas.

Amazon Bay has a small beautiful multicolor RBTA, but it's a bit pricey.  I've already got a few clove polyps and a bit of halimeda in the nano right now.  I could probably steal some ricordea from one of the other tanks.  Maybe I should put in some pulsing xenia Tongue

Would it matter what kind of shrimp I put in there?

I haven't needed much in the way of top-off so far.  I think regular water changes will be a must in such a small tank, though.  I only use my 10G at home for a quarantine, and other than that my smallest tanks are 20G and 29G.

I've got mushrooms, ricordea, toadstools, all kinds of stuff that you could get some clippings of.  With that small of a tank, you want to stay with easy care stuff, and my little tank always needs some thinning, if you are interested.

I would guess that it doesn't have enough light to support an anemone.  Shrooms, xenia, and zoos would be cool though.  Since it's covered you could get a firefish.  A pair of neon gobies would go well in there too.

Or how about a pair of yasa hasa?  Those fish are so cool.

Angel, I don't mean at all to sound like a know-it-all or anything, but it took me a while to figure out what fish you were talking about. Smiley  I searched for what you typed and got nothing, but google recommended searching for yasha hasa, which is some anime character.  I did finally find it though.

It's a Yasa Hashe goby, or Stonogobiops yasha.  I have no idea how to pronounce either of those words though.  They look like a sweet fish though.  Since they are a shrimp goby, you could have one (or two) of them and a pistol shrimp too.  That would be kindof neat to watch.

Not enough light for an anemone, eh?  Well, that's too bad.  It's got three 9W T5s, btw, one of which is blue.

Now up to ~10lbs rock, 3/4" coarse sand, an eyelash blenny from the last reeftopia order, an odd mithrax with black claws, speckled body, and red hairy legs, and a hermit that hitchhiked in with one of the rocks.  In addition to the previously mentioned halimeda and clove polyps.

Still trying to decide on the main attractions.

The fish looks pretty cool, but a pistol shrimp is pretty low on my list.

Still considering my options...

Nice pics Jeff!  I really like that randalli pistol shrimp.  The goby is neat too.

If my tank wasn't in my living room I would probably go for a pistol shrimp/shrimp goby pair.  I sometimes have people sleep on my couch, so snapping would be bad. Smiley

Of all the species of the Pistol shrimps I have these are first the smallest and second the quietest...
