January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

I woke up this morning to find cloudy water in my itty bitty 10 gallon tank.  I know that this is can be part of the cycling process or the presence of some decaying organic matter.  The only problem is that there is not much in there to decay, and the tank has been cycled for 2 months now.  I have a finger leather, a few shrooms, xenia, green star polyp, and a ricordea in there.  I also have a turbo snail, cerith snail, and another unidentified snail that eats algae.  I just bought two small pieces of well cured live rock last weekend and I moved the contents in to this 10 from a 5 gallon tank about 2 weeks ago.  Those are the only changes made for this tank.  Any suggestions?  I just found it this morning and haven't had a chance to test the water or anything (I'm still at work).  Thanks guys.

Jeff,

If the cloudieness has a tint of color to it, then it is very likely an algae bloom.  If it is milky white, it could be a calcium - Alk imbalance.

Yep what Rick said!  Unless you have a sand bed and something stirred it which should clear up soon.

I have a shallow sand bed, but nothing to stir it really.  When I got home it was less cloudy, but still noticeable.

I found a clump of halimeda that had turned completely white.  Just in case this was the culprit, I threw it away and I am going to do a 20% water change.  Any other suggestions?

How do I know if I have a calcium/alkalinity imbalance?

Halemida is mostly made of calcium and when it dies it crumbles up and turns to sand and the calcium dissolves back into the water.  It is not bad for the tank but it will aslo release any excess nutrients back into the tank. Someone correct me if I am wrong on this.

I believe you are correct Angel.  It also is a huge calcium hog.  It competes with the corals and will suck up all the CA it can.
