April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

Hello - I'm new to the area and this bulletin board, so I don't know if this topic has been discussed to death.  I'm working on making artificial rock ("aragacrete"), and will be setting up an aquarium in the not-to-distant future.  I would like to find some aragonite sand for a reasonable price - has anyone ever found any of the Yardright or Oldcastle tropical play sand (aragonite sand) in this area?  Has there ever been a group buy of the sand here?

Thanks

Marty

You may have to go online to find it.  The Oldcastle is usually sold at Wal-Mart but mostly on the East cost.  I looked for Aragonite sand at Lowes and Home Depot and neither of them carried while I was there.  I know someone in the club made some at one point but not sure who and what they used.  I know that's not much help but I thought I would share anyway.

Could have been but not sure since it was so long ago.  You can go to GARF.org and see what they have to offer.  They do this stuff all the time.

Thanks - GARF is where I've been reading about the techniques.  I was just hoping to find the sand for both the aragocrete and a sand bed at a better price.  I paid about $20 each for two 15 lb bags of CaribSea aragonite sand products ( ~ $1.33 per pound) to get started.  Apparantly, at least in the past, YardRight tropical play sand was selling for $4-$6 per 50 lb bag in the northeast.  I guess it doesn't show up in the west, and shipping drives the cost up (if you manage to get someone to ship it to you) - but not as high as CaribSea.

I have not been able to find any of the generic stuff around here.  Always settled for Carib Sea and have been very happy with it, especially since you get to choose the size of granules you want.

We bought 2 40 lb. bags of Aragonite from MarineDepot.com, shipping wasn't too bad.  Might be worth looking at them just to compare.

Marine depot is great!  I have heard nothing but good things about them.
