Valonia Algae

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.  
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.

Ok so when I got to WA to get the family and the tank it was covered in valonia algae.  I said fine since the rock was coming out any way I could scrub it down and clean it up.  Well the crap is back.  I have three emerald crabs in there now and I understand from every available resource that these are the best thing for it.  But it you break one and it spreads spores and the emeralds are breaking them to eat then at which point do it go away?  Any suggestions on where this is coming from since I didn't have any before I left WA?

What has worked for me is to stick a syringe into the valonia and suck out the liquid.  This leaves a leathery skin that can be easily plucked off the rock and tossed.  This method helps prevent the spread of the algae.

Thanks guys I will try both.  I appreciate it.

What causes this though?  My phosphates are 0, nitrates 0, and ammonia 0.  I read on a site that this stuff just shows up on live rock.  But it's an algae ant it has to feed off of something to so what is it?  I will pull the biggest rock with it out this weekend and scrub it amd will try you suggestions on the rest.
