Mid-Columbia Saltwater Aquarium Club

April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

Thanks, it was nice seeing you, and everyone, at the meeting too.   We'll see what Rick comes up with and get back to you for the Reeftopia order.

Vicky

This is what I would start out your tank with

30 Scarlet Hermits - 60.00
100 Cerith Snails - 75.00
300 Golden Astrea Snails - 75.00
12 Nerite Snails - 24.00
6 Emerald Crabs - 30.00
1 Harlequin Serpent Star - 15.00

Either:
100 Medium Blue leg hermits - 60.00
or
100 Small Blue leg hermits - 35.00

Note that the small are about as big as the eraser on a No. 2 pencil
As a better alternative to the Blue leg hermits, get more Scarlet hermits, they live longer and do not eat your snails when they are hungry.

Hope that helps.

Rick

If you are looking for more Live Rock, Check out this link,  you get 36lbs delivered for 139.99, that is $3.88 / lb which is a pretty good price.  It is also very nice looking rock.
http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1670

This link has all of their rock, some which will be cheaper and some more $$  http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/scateg.cfm?pCatId=393

The Tonga deep water rock is the larger pieces for a larger show tank.
The Caribbean live rock looks like a bunch of plates that may be difficult to aquascape with.  The Fiji rock is dense, so you don't get a lot of rock volume per pound of weight and $$.

Rick, thanks very much - this is extremely helpful!  I appreciate the time you took, and thought put into it, to give us your recommendations.  We will probably do as you suggest and increase the scarlets, decrease the blue legs.    I've looked extensively at the Drs Fosters & Smith rock...(I understand they took over or bought out a site that was called Flying Fish Express).  Their Lalo rock looks really interesting.  I don't want Fiji and I really don't want any Caribbean rock...we've got Kaelini now, which is nice, but pretty bland now that it is cured.  I know we have to be patient and it does seem to be getting a little more life on it in less than a week.  I was told by one collector in LA that Kaelini and Tonga deep water are essentially the same rock - not sure if that is true or not.  Since we have already put about half our rock in the tank, we are hoping to add more rock before we completely cycle and have to start over...and we don't really want to cure it ourselves, so guess we are willing to pay a bit more for rock that is at least partially cured (we know it still has die-off in shipping).  Have looked at several sources...one guy is selling some on e-bay, but that always makes us nervous!  We'll keep looking but will go ahead and give our order to Dashia for Reeftopia.  Thanks again for your suggested 'shopping list'! Vicki--
Hey, I will have a few pieces left over that I have decided not to put back in my tank. It is COMPLETELY dead though, so not very pretty. But there are a few cool pieces I would sell you for $1 per pound. Rick has seen it, maybe you can ask him. Or feel free to come take a peek. If you mix some plain dead rock in with live rock, it will take off pretty quickly. Just a thought to get you some more rock quickly. Let me know if you are interested. I have NO idea what kind it is, so you will just have to do the peek test and see if you like all or any of it.
