My adult Seahorses (Hippocampus Erectus) finally figured it out, now I have around 65 three week old fry and they are growing fast.     The parents are tank raised Ocean Rider's Sunbursts.  I purchaesd the parents as juveniles last January. I believe I have someone coming from Oregon (weather permitting) to pick up about 30 of them, but I would like to place a few more, before it becomes difficult to keep up with them.  They are currently eating enriched live baby brines, but will soon try and start them on frozen mysis.  Because they are still so young, I thought I'd see if anyone wanted to trade something for some of them.  When they are older and eating frozen mysis, I will offer them for sale.  Oh, I also have some tank raised gulf pipefish that are about four months old for sale or trade.

I am interested in your syngnathids.  I've had a tank set aside just for the larger seahorses and/or other pipefish, but had given up on finding a local source, especially with the recent scarcity.  What are you looking for in trade?

And of course I have lots of questions Cheesy

How big are your erectus young now at three weeks?  What are you using to gut load the brine shrimp?  What kind of gulf pipefish do you have?  Are they compatible with the H. erectus?  What are they eating?

Thanks.  Congratulations on your success with raising these!  Now we just need some pictures... Tongue

Hi everyone,

I didn't expect to get a response so quickly.  Cheesy  I didn't think there was anyone around interested in seahorse locally.

The little guys are just around an inch long if stretched out.  I'm hatching baby brine shrimp in two hatcheries so the BBS are usually just hatched when I use them.  It is my understanding that when newly hatched the bbs have not yet formed mouths, so I don't believe gut loading is really accurate.   I'm adding Vibrance (supplemnet purchased from Ocean Riders) to the hatcheries.  What I hope is happening is that it is coating the bbs, adding to the nutritional value. To the Vibrance, I've added some Beta Glucan.  This is the same mixture I add to my adult seahorses frozen Mysis shrimp.  I'm hoping this will also help me wean them from the bbs to frozen because of the familiar taste and smell.  That's my hope anyway.

The pipefish were also raised on bbs, but now eat the organisims they find living in my main tank.  They get along just great fine with the seahorses. Because I have so many pipes right now, I'm supplementing with some bbs every few days.  I've seen some of the larger ones steal food from the seahorse's dish. Yes, I actually do feed them in an upside down clamshell.  It  helps keep the food contained and they know right where to go at meal time.

I have 5 adults in my main tank.  They range in size from about 9 " to 6", though it's difficult for me to be accurate.  Oh, I also have a smaller tank with about 5 minis (dwarfs) seahorses.

What I was hoping to trade for is possible some plant life or non stinging coral with lower light requirments and I'm looking for peppermint shrimp.  I'm really open to just about anything I can use in my tanks.  You PM me if you want.

Thanks for the replys to my post.  I will try and find out when your meetings are and see if I can make it to the next one. Thanks!

Great pictures!  Those sunbursts are sure brightly colored.

My understanding also was that the brine shrimp could not eat for 12-24 hours.  I had not heard about enriching them simply by coating them, but I'm not really familiar with your supplements-I'm sure they're good if you got them from Ocean Riders.

Information about the next club meeting is in this post.  I don't know if anyone else in the club is currently keeping pipefish, but they are a very active, open, enthusiastic group who would probably love to talk to you about them. Smiley

I'll pm you separately.  I'm glad you came out of "lurk" mode Smiley

I am glad you are having such good luck Ceejay. I have always wanted Sea horses but I don't have a Tank at this time that would be friendly for them However when I move to my new house I do plan on setting up a dedicated Tank for a larger pair.

Paul, back when i was trying to get Leopard wrasses used to my tank It would take 1-2 weeks of feeding them Live Brine shrimpto get them to eat prepaired foods. Now i know these were grown adults not babies but I was Told to soak them in Selcon and Live Dts and i would see the last a little longer in the fridge. I do think this helped with upgrading the nutrtional value of the brine shrimp. On another note

Sunday I was at Aqua Tropics and they were feeding their salt water live stock with some sort of live worms I thoght they might be blood worms anyone seen this before?

I have bought live blood worms from Amazon Bay and the fish love it.  Not too sure about the sea horses though.   Those sunburst sure are beautiful.

Thanks everyone!  Although I've lurked in the shadows for awhile, I hesitated to post because I'm such a novice, I really didn't feel I had anything to share.  Thanks for making me feel welcomed!  Does anyone else out there currently have seahorse?  I also have about 5 mini (dwarfs, pygmies) in a 15 gallon tank.  They have recently reproduced too, but they have much smaller broods, so I don't have a "space" problem with them....

CeeJay,

You are by no means a "Novice".  You have been successful in areaa that many of us would love.  Growing & propagating corals is much easier than propagating saltwater fish.  I know that Jeff has had broods of Banggai Cardnals, but I'm not sure of the final outcome.

I am sure we can help you out with a wide variety of corals and some calurpa that the seahorses may like.

I look forward to meeting you at one of our meetings.

Has anyone heard from ceejay in the last year?  Was wondering how she did with her baby seahorses.
