January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

For a tank that size I would put a chiller on it.  I would put a fan or two in the canopy or if you have a sump one over the sump to help cool it down.  How close are the lights to the water?

Assuming you meant that you would not put a chiller on it Wink, I agree with you.  I've got a 250 MH over a 29 Gallon here, and getting the fans to properly vent the heat from the light cleared up all heat problems.  The characteristics of a 29G (high surface to volume, thin glass, small volume of water) are such that it doesn't retain heat well anyway.

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

The lights are 10 1/16" away from the water. The temperature stays at 78 only if the room is 70 or the the air conditioner is on. I am going to get the 1/15 HP Current USA Prime Mini-Chiller and a Mag Drive 7 pump.
The chiller has 750 BTUs of cooling power.

Ok, I think I'll chime in here. A chiller needs to be sized according to the load of a given system. For proper sizing you need to calculate the BTU's needing to be removed from the water. The way that btrue did it is great.
First of all a BTU (British Thermal Unit) is the amount of energy it takes to heat/cool one pound of water 1 degree F in one hour. So for that 29 gallon tank lets assume that there is 25 gallons nominal and he timed the temperture rise of three degrees for about one hour. Assuming saltwater is 8.5 lbs/gallon then I come up with 425 btu's needed of heat removal.
So, that 1/15th HP chiller will be just fine.  Grin
