January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

Hey everyone,

Help!  Looks like I just lost both of my clams overnite.  got up this morning and they are both just about gone. They have been fine up until now. I was in Spokane all day yesterday,  by the way Keven says "hi" to everyone,  and  I asked Angela if the loked ok yesterday and she said that they looked like they always did.  This morning they are just about gone.  Anyone have any ideas?

Test the water?  What are the params?  Did you have any spikes, any new additions or temp swings?

pH 8.2 Alk 3.5 meg/l, calcium 400, temp 78.7, s/g 1.25.  everything else in the tank is fine.  It happened so quick, I'm wondering if it was a bristleworm or something along those lines.  everything I can check is ok.  this is the problem with a small tank, the smallest contaminent can just cause fits.  But everything else in the tank is fine.  thats why its so puzzling.

John,

It really sounds like some type of predator.  When I have lost clams in the past, they usually take their time dying.  From your description it was nearly overnight, and they were gone.  That is a better description for something that was hungry and found a t-bone steak.

I know what you are going through, over the past week I have lost a golden headed sleeper goby who was healthy and eating well, swimming all over the tank, and the next day gone.  Then the same thing happened to my male Anthias.  I think I need to rig up some crab or shrimp traps, maybe even a starfish, but something is feasting at my expense.

You might try setting some raw shrimp or scallops in a small jar, long and tall like an olive jar.  Put it at an angle with the opening against some live rock.  Then the critter can crawl up the rock and in the jar, but the glass is smooth and they can't climb out.  Then check on it after the lights have been out for a while.  A flashlight with a red filter will keep them from retreating as they don't see red very well.

John,
You have had those clams since August Meeting.    Which fish do you have besides Hawkfish, Coral Beauty, etc.    I am speaking and asking Barry N.   He is monitoring this.

Ed,
The only thing in there is the coral beauty, the flamehawk, and the yellow coris wrasse.  Other than that there are snails and a couple of emerald crabs. thats it for livestock.  I am thinking along the lines of Rick that it was a predator, because it did happen so fast, but let me know if there is something else I need to look at.

The latest from Barry is that the Coral Beauty is a hit and miss with Clams.   Barry is thinking the same thing I think.    I was wrong.    I did not know you had a yellow coris wrasse.       But I am still confused on how it could happen so fast with both clams.     .  This is a lesson for me.   I am learning also.  I am sorry for your loss.   I hope to prevent this from happening to  you or someone else.

What about an ammonia spike?  If the clams died and then the cleaners ate them.  They are pretty sensitive to water quality and all you have are softies in the tank which don't struggle much with ammonia unless it's long term.  Could it be that?

I got a pm from Barry.    I will post it when I get home from work tonight.

Here is one thing I learned.

Quote:
How does the size of a aquarium effect the stability of a clam

The smallier the aquarium, the more you might experience chemitry swings due to evaporatiion such as pH, salinity. The more water volume to less chance of messurable swings. IMHO.

Here is feed back with people experienced with clams.

http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10993

Here are questions that Barry brought up to me.

How large is the tank?
How long has it been set up?
What kind of tank mates are in it?
Have you introduced anything new lately?  (ie. Animals or buffers or anything)

I was concerned with evaporation and salinity change.
I did not ever remember seeing a yellow coris wrasse when I watched your tank John.    Here are other oppinions on what might have happened.     Again, oppinions that are not meaning to upset anyone but to learn from others experiences. Cheesy
