Mid-Columbia Saltwater Aquarium Club

April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

Any good ideas in how to stack rock without looking like junk. any plans that you may have seen and wished that you followed before now? Please share. Now that I am pulling my DSB, I am reaquascaping the whole thing and want to give it the full look if possible.

I am not responding to give you advice because you obviously know more than I do but I just wanted to say Hi since I hadn't talked to you in a while.  So how's the tank coming along?  Did you get all moved in?  Update please?

Didn't sell. Have to put a new manufactured home on our lot. Certain laws forbid us from selling the existing place. So we are busy trying to figure out what we could do.

Good luck. I still can't believe I got slammed by a stupid law. Talk about screwed up. Now I have to spend $120,000 - $130,000 just to break about even.

I have fome fiji rock that I have set some Zoo rocks on hoping they will spread over to it.  I don't have a tonga and in my next set up I want to use a lot kaelini.

I would stack the rock with as many bridges, caves, and over hangs as you can get.  This will spread the rock out more but sometimes makes it unstable.  You can zip tie or glue rock together too to hold them in place.  If you stick to similar rock (fiji, tonga, or Kaelini) they tend to blend better.  I have several different kinds in my tank now but as the corraline starts to cover it all it is blending in nicely.  HTH

Oh and by the way bigger pieces work better than smaller pieces.

Kaelini is the new "hot" rock.  It is lighter and more porous than tonga or fiji.  The club put in a group order in December so Rick can tell you more about where they ordered it.  Mike had some at AmazonBay and it had four colors of coralline algae on it.  Very pretty rock.

Jeff,

We can get either Kalieni or Pucanti rock for a good price.  Les will be wanting some soon, so if you are interested keep in touch.  In November we ordered 550lb of rock for the club.  I filled the new 240 with it.  This rock turned out to be primarily old dead table corals, shaped like an upside down chocolate kiss candy.  Worked great for aquascaping my tank.

I wanted Barbie to get pictures of me trashing her living room when I aquascaped the tank, but it didn't happen.

Here is what I did.... I put all the rock on a big blue tarp on the floor and figured how I wanted them to fit.  Then I took my drill and a 7/8 wood boring speed bit (the flat ones) and drilled holes in the rock where they would join.  After drilling mating holes in each piece of rock I then pinned the rock together with 1/2" grey pvc pipe cut to length.  This allowed me to build a very open (and stable!!) reef with a lot of flat table tops where I placed the corals.  The small points of the bottom of the tables are on the bottom of the aquarium or are drilled and pinned to the flat tops of other tables to give me a bunch of tiers of flat shelves.  Turned out pretty cool.

Pictures will be on the web site today.,
