April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

I just bought 2 XM 250w MH DE bulbs for my tank and apparently they don't work real well on Icecap ballests.  So I need to sell them and purchase some other bulbs.  They have maybe a 20 hours worth of use..  I would like to get $100 for the two of them..  Please let me know if you are interested..

Thanks
Mike

If you want to find out how well a MH bulb will perform with certain MH Ballast go to the link below.

Ed and I went to Sanjay Joshi's presentation last Saturday and it was very interesting and full of a lot of information.  He also dispelled several myths that have often been spread on the boards regarding MH lighting.

For example, you can often get 16 - 18 months out of a bulb, the caveat is the ballast, the harder you drive it, the less it will last.

Also, double ended HQI 250W bulbs and ballasts do not give any more light than a 400W mogul bulb, infact in his table of bulb specifications, there is not a 250W HQI bulb in the top 14 bulb/ballast combos.

http://www.reeflightinginfo.arvixe.com/

Click on "Search Performance Data" and if you leave all fields clear, you will get all data on all bulbs and ballasts.  Each column in the resulting table is sortable by clicking on the top of the column.

The PPFD column is what we care about, that is the measurement of how much light (Photons) is being emitted.  The higher the PPFD the better the light.

Also note the CCT column, that is the "Corrected Color Temperature"  It will tell you how close a 10k bulb really is to actually being 10K.  A lot of mfg are not all that truthful.

And for example, if you look at the XM 400W 10000K bulb and click on the  plot, you will find different plots and data for the same bulb but driven with different ballasts.

I will present my notes from the presentation at this Friday's club meeting.

they are 10k bulbs..  I have them on Icecap 250w MH ballasts, and sunlight and supply reefoptix III pendants.  They just don't fire all the time..  So I contacted icecap and sunlight and supply and they both said that XM and Hamilton are Chinese bulbs and they don't work real well on Icecap ballasts (I guess they aren't really made for electronic ballasts).  One of the bulbs will fire every time, I also have a new hamilton 14k that was having problems firing, but now it seems to work all the time.  Icecap also mentioned that the XM's on Icecap ballasts actaully run at about 205w instead of 250w.

anyway if anyone is interested in these bulb let me know.  there is nothing wrong with them they just don't work well with my setup.

Thanks
