April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

I just bought a dual 175 MH retro kit for a hood I'm building for my 75gal.  Can anyone give me some insight to where a good place is for bulbs and what brands work for them?  Thanks.

Do a google search for XM mh bulbs. one good place to deal with is www.inreef.com

If you liked the look of my tank then get 10k bulbs, if you want more blue and less red, yellow, white and green then get 20k bulbs

Do you prefer, or get any better life out of a bulb, with any particular brand?

Bulb life is one of those "follow the masses things".  There have been tests run by reefers who have access to very sophisticated test equipment that have provided general guidlines on bulb life.  Usually the MH bulbs are used for approximately 12 months when using a standard magnetic ballast, and there have been claims of extending that life to 16 months when using electronic ballasts.  Now at the end of 12 months, most of us cannot tell the bulb needs to be changed, that is because as a bulb ages, it slowly will shift the primary range in the color spectrum that it is generating light in.  Often t an undesirable red/yellow shift which promotes the growth of undesirable algae.  And if that algae gets a foothold in your tank, it is VERY difficult to erradicate.

The article at the link below is very good comparison on different MH bulbs, with different ballasts.  Bottom line of the report is that the XM bulbs are one of the best in fulfilling the desired spectral output.  Especially when you look at a cost comparison.

The author of this article, Sanjay Joshi will be presenting on lighting this month at the Seattle reef club meeting.  A few of us will be making the trip to learn more about lighting our tanks.  This should be a very informative presentation.

Its my oppinion, That when your corals stop growing as usual your bulb is due to be replaced.    I think the average is 9 months,   People that I talk to usually go 12 months.   When you buy  a bulb, keep a log of date you added it to your tank.

I want to add something since we are on this subject.    If you ever break a bulb casing or shield on a HQI Pendant replace it imediately.   That bulb casing  or Glass on a HQI or Double ended Pendant is the UV shield.  It will burn your corals very quickly.

Again, I usually monitor the reaction  from my corals.
I hope this helps,

Very good article on the link you posted Rick, thanks.  I decided to go with a pulse start ballast which shows some promise of longer life.    Would love to make the trip to Seattle but have other commitments.  Sad
BTW, yes I really did like the color your MHs were putting out.  Your tank is awsome.
