April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

new 300 Gal Reef tank

« on: April 03, 2005, 08:57:37 pm »

I need to upgrade to a new protein skimmer for my tank but there are so many options for skimmers.  Anyone have a good idea of one for 200 gal of water?

I really like the ETSS skimmers. They are set and forget, at least as close to that as you can get. I have a Reef Devil and a Gemini 800. For yours I would recommend a Gemini 750, or the largest of the Reef Devil series.
Another top notch skimmer is a EuroReef. They perform well but hit alot harder in the wallet than ETSS.

I like the ETSS but they are spendy.  I have a Euroreef for 90 gal right now...they are nice but doesn't seem to pump enough water.  I looked at one like the Euroreef called ASM G-3 model. http://www.saltycritter.com/skimmers-asm.htm
The ETSS 800 is alot more $.  Plus you have to buy a pump for it.
I looked at the MR2 at this site.(http://www.acropora.net/protein_skimmers.htm)
Seem really nice that you can upgrade them to get more out of them....good plus but somewhere between ETSS and Euroreef for cost.
Do you like the reef devil?
got a link for it?

Kyle,
Try this link for ETSS skimmers.

Here is the ETSS mfg web page.

http://www.superskimmer.com/

All of their skimmers are rated by the gallons per hour of the water they process.  This is NOT the gallons of water in your system.  Please look at this link to determine what amount of water turnover you need for your system.

I agree with Les on the simplicity of the ETSS.  Set and leave it, leaves me with time to enjoy rather than fiddle with the tank.

Thanks for the info on the ETSS.  It was very helpful to know about turn over for tanks size and protein skimmers...no wonder I am having problems.  Next months budget is set for a new skimmer....tax return.

If you feel like building one, stay tuned.  I just got the technical details on building a great airstone skimmer.  It will work much better than the ETSS I currently have and use 1/4 the electicity.  I am getting the parts list put together and expect the total cost to be around $300.  Look at Mojo's airstone skimmer on reeffrontiers, it will be essentially the same except without the wet neck design.
