You can  buy it locally at Griggs in Pasco.  Go the canning dept.  I believe it is around $1.15 a can.

Griggs didn't have any last week, so I ordered some online at canningpantry.com. They got $48.23 a case with shipping. If Griggs has some later next month like they told me they would and at last years price I intend to get some more and stock up.

Mike, the new tank is collecting dust for a few days as I have been busy on removing the old one. I plan to get started on plumbing tonight or tomorrow and start the electrical by the weekend.

Hey Guys how much ball pickling lime are you adding to you make up water / per gallon of your tank size? Any sugetions would be greatly appreciated...Jeff

I have been currently using Kent Marine Superbuffer-dKH specially formulated pH buffer and alkalinity or carbonate hardness (KH) builder, designed to adjust the pH of saltwater aquariums to the range of 8.0 to 8.3 The application of this is one table spoon for every 30 gallons of tank water If I follow this rule and dose my tanks it ussally raises the ph up .1 ion....

I have a kalkwasser reactor so I don't actually mix it.  I just dumped the entire container of pickling lime into the reactor.  then that mixes with my fresh top off water..

JEFF, i dont know that much about it, however from the info i was able to gather, usually 1-2 teaspoon per gallon of makeup water is ok, for example if you evap 3 gallons a day, id setup a drip w 3 gals and 3 tsp  but are you dripping this in??
it has to be added very slowly to your tank, like overnight, pickling limewater can seriously spike your ph levels most of the powder you add usually settles to the bottom of a doser, you want to drip clear water, so let it sit overnight before dripping it., some people dont even change the powder out for several days until it changes color...
good luck

So the pickling lime is just like the kalkwasser and it is used to raise PH and Alkalinity?  So you should have a ph monitor and really need to be running a Calcium Reator to be using or needing the pickling lime right?

Sorry I think I am getting the hang of the mechanical stuff of setting up the tank now comes the chemical stuff.  My 55g was so simple to dose with store bought stuff but it is getting expensive.

Any suggestions on using this stuff or it sounds like this might be a great next meeting subject!  Cheesy

Shane i have In-line Pinpont PH controlers on both my tanks and yes i have about 3 gallons a day losses in evaporation on my 150 tank I dont test for Alkalinity everyday but I have learned since this post to mix 2 teaspoons of the Lime to 3 gallons of make up water this is added about every4 days I have never needed to add Calcium yet as I do 20% water changes evry 2 weeks and this keeps my calcium in check . With 2 teaspoons it will raise my ph  up from 7.9 to 8.05. I ussally do this in the early am before lights go on and my Ph will be around 8.2 by Night time so It is working for me And i wanted to pass on what its doing in my tank all take care hope to see ya all in the June meeting...Jeff

Angel,

Pickling Lime is the same stuff as kalkwasser, just much cheaper because you get it at the grocery store Smiley

Many people just starting their reef tank will dose kalk primarily to add Calcium (CA) to the water.  As we get more advanced with our reef tanks, the addition of kalk assumes a different role, that is to keep ph up because often the Calcium reactor will lower ph due to CO2, and to assist in the export of phospates by binding with phosphate and then leaving the system through the protien skimmer.

Kalk is also good to dose at night to help keep the ph up because it typically falls while the lights are off.  When you use Kalk, in a 5 gal pail, add 4 to 6 tablespoons to 4 or 5 gal of RO/DI water. Stir vigorously for several minutes.  Let the undesolved solids settle to the bottom of the pail and pour off the clear liquid that remains.  Set up a wate jug (like one used for camping) above your tank or sump and run a drip line (1/8" airline hose) from the water jug to the sump.  Get a hose pinch valve (go to the veterinarian for a used one for free) from a used IV line.  Put the pinch valve on the drip hose running to the sump and pinch it closed.  Make sure the end of the hose in the sump is setup to drip into a turbulent area so the kalk will quickl mix.  Fill the water jug with the clear kalk mix poured from the 5 gal pail and place it high enough that the liquid will drip out, into the sump.  Open the pinch valve a little and set it to drip about 2 drops per second.  NOTE!! on tanks smaller than Angels (less than 100 gal) reduce the drip rate to make sure you do not raise the ph too high!  This could be a MAJOR disaster if PH gets too high.  If you do get the ph too high, you can add distilled white vinegar to drop the ph quickly.  It is best to start out slow and gradually increase the drip rate while monitoring  ph.
