January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

The other day I couldnt believe that one of the LONG time employees sold someone a Scopas Tang knowing full well they have a 3 week old 20 gallon tank.

That just makes me sad.

I understand making money is important but come on.

Welcome to the forum.

That is why not many people in the club deal with Aqua Tropics.  A couple years ago when my tank was fish only I had one of the guys try to sell me an anenome.  He wouldn't let me out of the damn store...  That was the last day I every entered that store..  Plus they don't really do much for our club or even really recongnize it.

Aqua Tropics isn't all that bad, they are just like all the rest of stores around here. I have noticed that at Amazon Bay there is one person that thinks he knows everything. He went so far as to tell my brother that they had the lowest price on tanks within this area. As most people know, Pet Smart has the lowest price on glass tanks. Also, that same person sold be a coral that needed to be hand fed every day and needed a dark cave to live in. I guess that what I'm trying to say is not to rely on the pet stores for advice, read books and listen to others is what works for me.

Every once in a blue monn AT will get some nice stuff in but that doesn't happen very often.  AB is getting more things in more often.  They have a their new display tank up with a frag rack in it but MIke said he needs to upgrade the lighting in it.  I think Mike tries really hard to do the right thing but AT just try really hard to make the sale.  I don't know anyone who knows everything there is to know about our hobby so do as Les suggested and do your research.  Oh and stay away from Chris and Carols!

Oh yes I learned very quickly not to trust what most people say about this hobby. I do lots of research.

I like AB- I saw the new display but it was just water the last time I saw it. I cant wait. I LOVE frags!

Chris and Carols is just scary. They really need to give it up.

I should post the pics of Chris and Carols I was able to get recently.

I tell you I have NEVER seen green "slime" algae until I went there.....

Working as one to promote anyone willing to learn

« Reply #8 on: March 17, 2005, 04:29:26 pm »

The thing we have to remember is...We all want to work together.    You are going to get the occasional bad information or bad oppinion from people in stores.   Someone wanting to impress you by saying hey I work in a store I know what I am doing.   The fact is not all people do know how to give good information so they wing it.   When they wing it, the person that is fed this information fails.   The goal is to get everyone up to speed, to prevent those people from getting misled or wrong information, to create a better product for individual(healthy fish, coral).   I believe we all want to work together.  I would like to see all the store owners and employees at a meeting.   Here is what I ask, if you see someone making a judgement call, If you know the right answer, Politely say If it were me I would wait.    I would like to show you how.   Please come to a Meeting and learn with the rest of us.   I can save you time, grief and money.   I may prevent your new fish from dying, I may save you money by not buying something that is wrong for your tank.   I can show you which animals are compatible with other animals.  Its up to you, But you have to take the time to learn or want to learn.   Impress your customers with accurate information and they will come back begging for more...People like to succeed, please be positive and listen and then double check your information.    If someone says My Salinity should be such and such.   I would look at natural sea water.   But its not the person feeding you information, its you also.   I know you want to believe peoples oppinions, but double check those oppinions take a chance to see them if they work or not.   That is what Club meetings are about.  We can check out how others set up their equipment, we can see which fish can sometimes live together, We can compare notes.    I hope we all can work together in the future.. I know each one of us is our own person, We can not forgive people at times easily for  bad information, that is your choice.  I do believe if people work together in the future we could all profit..
coffee is kicking in over here..
wish you a good one,
Ed Cheesy

One day at a time!

I do want to state that on Sunday 3/13- I went to AT. I had a $40.00 gift certificate burning a whole in my pocket!!!!  There was a fish there that I kept staring at! It was awesome!!! I had never heard of it before and was unsure. So, instead of asking an employee....I made a couple of calls to fellow clubbers and got great info!!! It wasn't for me! Bummer. Sad   BUT!!!. instead I got a yellow tang and purple psuedo that are just great. Cheesy  I had mentioned to the guy bagging my fish that I really liked the other one and he stated "yah, it is really neat in a reef tank". When I got home and read about them.....they actually eat starfish, crabs, etc....NOT good in a reef tank.

On the same note, I was in AB a couple weeks ago and was looking around when I overheard an employee tell some newbies with a 10 gallon that a tang is great for a FIRST fish!!!! YIKES. I tried very politely to tell them that I would go with a different fish for my first fish and tried to give them some ideas. However, it was obvious that they believed the worker. They bought the tang. It was sad. I have however spoken to that worker and let them know how I felt.

Anyway, point being that you will get both good and bad from EVERY store. Just remember to do your homework and you should be fine! Cheesy

I know nothing about AT, and I have limited experience with AB, but I am fairly confident that if Mike at AB knew that his staff was giving that type of information, he wouldn't be very happy.  Mike knows quite a bit about this hobby, and seems to also be a smart businessman.  I think he knows that if people aren't successful with his product, they aren't likely to come back.

I have a suggestion.  If any club member happens to be in AB and hears the staff giving obviously bad advice to someone, let Mike know!  It might help him, plus help those poor unsuspecting souls out there with soon to be dead fish.  Hey you might become a hero to a fish or two as well.   Cheesy

I havent  had any bad experiences with AB.  Im not sure why the employee at AT sold them that tang. He knows better. It wasnt an expensive fish either- 20 bucks.

He also sold them not one but 2 lettuce nudis. That tank doesnt have enough for them to eat.

Oh well I guess. They will have to learn the hard way.

I did tell them about a few of the big message boards hoping they would take a look.

All I can say is I LOVE MCSAC!!!!!!!  We have probably the greatest resource in the midcolumbia!  Our folks aren't afraid to ask questions or challenge information.  We have the friendliest group of reefers you will ever meet too.  If you have questions or someone you know has questions refer them to one of our meetings and mingle.

I have to say it "I love you guys!"
(((((((((((( Cheesy ))))))))))))))) Group hug!
