January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

Chaetomorpha is the spaghetti Algea that your reffering to Vicki. Kevin sells it In his store In spokane and 2 times i have seen it for sale at Amazon bay When you get your tank up and running and if you want to cycle your lights this is pretty good for Nitrate removal. However I have found that my tangs don't really care to eat it If You have a Tang that wont Eat Nori the calurpa is ussally what they will go after...Hope this helps ..Jeff

Zul,

...Some people will claim that exposing calurpa to light constantly may cause it to go a-sexual and potentially crash.  ...

Rick,
Someone (sales person at one of the Spokane stores) told us that "spaghetti" calerpa was best because it "doesn't ever go asexual"... have you heard of this?  Just wondering.

Thanks again Jeff.  Good info on those links.  So, sounds like you'd want chaeto for fuge filtration, since (if I read this right, it doesn't go asexual like calerpa) but maybe a little calerpa to feed tangs (I do want some tangs!), but keep it thinned out.  Calfo made a good point about not cutting it - that is good info!

From what I understand Cualerpa is not a good food source for tangs and neither should be kept in the main display tank.  If you are afraid of it going asexual then putting it in your display tank is your worst nightmare as cualerpa goes asexual when the lights are off.  Cualerpa also releases toxins when it goes asexual, when cut, or when eaten.  So don't think this is the best choice for your dsiplay tank.  It is good for a fuge if you keep your lights on 24/7.  I believe garcilaria and brillo pad algaes are better options for the display tank and tang food.

Okay, so basically calerpa...bad!  Right?  I know I need more education on macroalgae.  Thanks!

Well Angel I have tried every thing on this little guy he is only 2" and is a very picky eater I agree With your assement However i haven't been able to get him to readally feed on anything elese at this time And this guy has had every thing except the kitchen sink .
However I plan on getting a new batch that i will leave in my small Refugeium all the time untill i pull some out for feeding ( small amounts)
I haven't heard of garcilaria so i will reserch it. Smiley   As for the brillo pad algaes I have alot of Chaetomorpha and none of my tangs will eat it they may taste it but they always go back to Nori.

Vicki,

Just a note regarding Caulerpa.  You will get many varying opinions on whether it is good or bad.  There is a thread on Reeffrontiers that goes on forever with different people's opinions on this subject.  I think after reading that thread, my opinion is that Caulerpa can be good or bad, just know what you are doing.

Thanks Barbie!  That makes sense; like a lot of things, you need to know what you are dealing with and how to use it...the object itself can be good or bad depending on your knowledge and expertise - like fire!

(very diplomatic response - you should be a politician! - jk!)

Thanks again.  I am going to try and educate myself more on calerpa.

Just a correction it is gracilaria not garcilaria my bad!

I have razor cualerpa in my fuge and used to have grape cualerpa but got rid of the grape stuff since that is the one you hear the most horror stories about.  I have tried different types of macros in my fuge and it seems that cualerpa is the only one that thrives for me.  I do pull it all out and trim then put it back in and throw away the pieces I have trimmed.  I am trying some of paul's (PSA) macro in there now and will see how it does?
