January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

Sounds good.  Aquatropics has an RoODI unit at the store for $200.00 but it has a couple of broken connectors. But probably not a bad deal.  Has anyone ever made one? Doesn't seem like they are very complicated?

You guys are looking in the wrong places.  Check this out... Ebay has a 6 stage RO/DI unit for a buy it now price of $69.99.  I bought one of these from Ebay last November and paid $89.00.  I would not even consider the pet stores for water makers.

Shane,

I am very happy with it.  I have tested the output and it tests fine.  I have not had it long enought to determine how long the filter cartridges last, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Terry,   This can be portable, the have a connector that attatches to the faucet spout and lets you get the supply water there.  All that is left is to run the waste water to the sink drain and the clean water to a jug.  If you wanted it would be easy to put together a small stand made from 2x4's that would hold it upright.

I got one of those 6-stage, RO/DI $90 e-bay units and so far have been happy with it, but I've only made about 5 gals of water to test it.  (I don't have a tank to put the water in yet -  ... but it is supposed to be started today at IAP!).    I got the garden hose adapter with mine and have it hooked to a Y at the utility sink.  The Y has a ball valve so you can use the sink w/o disconnecting the RO unit all the time. The unit just sits on the counter next to the sink.  I run the drain water into sink drain, the RO output water to one of those collapsible 5 gallon camp jugs (just for now, since I don't need to make up much water until I actually have a tank!).  I made about 5 gals of water with it, just to test it, but instructions said to toss first few gallons, so didn't test that water yet with my TDS meter (purchased from Filter Direct on E-bay at same time as RO)  It made up fairly quickly too.  I also got a tip from Marc Levenson's website about warming up the water to make the media in the cartridges last longer. (http://www.melevsreef.com/ro_di.html) I used 25' of irrigation drip hose, coiled in a Homer bucket from Home Depot and attached the 25' of drip line hose inline to the red water inlet line of the RO.  Have to get an aquarium heater to complete this set up.  MELEV's site says to run water into the bucket at 78 degrees, then running the water to the RO through the 25' of additional "in" hose will heat it up a bit and make RO more efficient, making your filter media last longer.  Tell ya in a year if this worked!  If anyone wants to look at this unit before buying one on e-bay, let me know.

Vicki,

I have been heating the supply water to my RO unit for years, but in a much simpler manner.

Go under the sink where you are going to draw your water from and attach a saddle tap valve (the self piercing type used for icemakers) to the hot & cold supply lines.  Then run a short hose from each valve to a TEE.  From the TEE run the line to the RO unit.  Open both valves fully.  When the RO unit draws water it will draw equally from both hot and cold and you will get a warm water supplied to the RO unit.

I can show you at the next meeting if you like.

Interesting...well, I appreciate the offer, thanks Rick.  But for now we are not going to install it under the sink with the saddle valve because we hope to install it later in the garage in a spot that is plumbed for a water softener - drain line and water line available.  Garage is well insulated, so shouldn't be problem with freezing.  So for now it is quite portable sitting next to the utility sink and my humble little bucket set up can be stored in the garage when we don't need it.  Also, I read in the RO instructions to never use water from a hot water heater - not sure why...figured it has to do with sediments perhaps from the H20 heater?  So, you've had no trouble using partially hot water for you RO huh Rick?  Thanks for the info.
