April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

I have a friend in Canada that had a really nice tank.   Recently his two year old put dish soap in his sump.    How would you react to the situation?

I would do a Massive Water change,  I would use a Poly filter to catch anything that was floating, and also carbon.

How would you react?

See if I could trade the two-year old for a couple nice frags.

Or, if that wasn't considered "appropriate", put a childproof lock on the stand door that opens to the sump to at least prevent future accidents of that nature.

As far as immediate action to take - I am interested in seeing what everyone suggests.  As a noob, I know nothing, but major water changes would be required, wouldn't they?  So, what ever happened to your friend's reef (not to mention his two-year old?)

He Lost about 10 colonies of Nice Acros so far. I mean really nice rare acros.    I was asking him for frags this morning,  He then told me about his accident.

I would have closed circulation to the sump off.  Turn your skimmer way up.  Setup a huge water change..

Sell the kid..My youngest uses my sump as a sink to wash her dishes from her little  play kitchen.  I am constanly pulling plates tea cups and plastic hot dogs out of the sump..

Mikey,

Remind me not to eat anything your youngest cooks if that's where she's doing her dishes.

MIke makes a good point on shutting the sump off.  If there is a q.tank I would move stuff over there or have a friend hold your corals and animals.  Daily water changes or drain the tank and refill it and the let the water age a few weeks.  Turn the skimmer up or even add another skimmer.  Add any and all kinds of filters possible (carbon, phosphate, etc).  Not much you can do about the two year old except remind him for the rest of his life how he almost destroyed your reef.  Vicki also gave a great answer about child proofing the stand.

Use the glass cleaner razor blade to slice the kids throat, chop them up into itty bitty tiny little pieces and shove them one at a time into the blades of your skimmer pump singing "We are the World!" . Do a massive clean up with bleach water which eleminates all traces of blood and then burn the cloths in the BBQ. No more problems.

And I thought my idea of trading the kid was an 'inappropriate' suggestion!

Lessons Learned / Notes to self:

If/when little kids visit my house, make sure cabinet door to sump has childproof lock.  (Double locks if little kid is evil great-nephew Tyler the Destructor)

Turn off sump immediately if foreign matter, i.e. soap, tea sets, plastic hot dogs, falls or is deliberately placed in it.

Don't eat any food prepared by Mike's daughter.  (good thing I don't like plastic hot dogs).

Turn down any/all offers from Matt to babysit kids/grandkids.

Yeah, that should cover it.  Thanks all for the laughter and the education, all rolled into one!
