April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

Working as one to promote anyone willing to learn

« on: January 03, 2005, 02:52:50 pm »

In a effort to help people learn, myself included.  Please explain your lighting and times you run your lights and which corals you grow..

I myself have 2 single ended 250 watt Metal Halides in a 4 foot 90 gallon aquarium.    I have a Hamilton 14K and a Coralvue 15K.    I am considering adding more light lately.   I may upgrade to two 400 watt Metal halide.    I have SPS (Small Polyp Stonies),LPS  (long Polyp stony) Frogspawn, Hammer,Softies- Xenia, Anthelle, Zoos, and mushrooms.    I run my lights for 12 hours a day.   I have a timer that turns them on at 9am.  The timer shuts them off at 9pm.
What do you have?

I have dual 400 watt MH, 10,000K bulbs. Also are 4 55 watt PC Actinic. The actinic are on from 6.30 till 9 PM. The MH are on from 8 Am to 8.30 PM. I have a few SPS, some LPS and a WHOLE TANK COVERED WITH Xenia, the pulsing brown type. I light my sump/fuge on a reverse lighting cycle with a single 400 watt MH 6500 K bulb. I have macro algea so thick that I use it to strain the bubbles from the water, I call that my live filter.
My usable tank area is 5.5 feet long, 24 inches wide and and effective depth of 16 inches. The new tank I just finished building is a tad larger.  Cheesy I hope to have it set up in another month or so.  Smiley

A tad larger.  You aint kiddin..

Anyway I have a 125 6' tank.  I run 2 10k 250's and 2 160w Actinic Vho's and 1 160w 50/50 VHO.  I am about to add 1 more 250 w MH.  Not so much because I need it for growth, but to balance out the color better in my 6' long tank.  2 250w pendants just don['t have enough spread for my tank.  But currently I have plenty of light for everything I have tried growing..

Thanks Mike

The 240 is lit up with:

4 - 400 watt, 10K MH running on electronic ballasts
4 - 95 watt, Actinic VHO fluorescent bulbs running on Ice Cap 660 electroninc ballast
3 - 7 watt blue incadescet bulbs on a dimmer for moon light simulation.

All the lighing is controlled through X10 modules switched by computer running the eLightmaster program and reproduces the varying sunrise, sunset and lunar phases as the seasons change.

Each of the two refugiums are lit up with:
2 -  95 watt PC's (1 - 10k & 1 - 65k) bulb.

Ed this was a very good question And i have loved this thread Back in May when i was getting ready to install lights you & Matt talked me into going to Kevins store and talking with Him. I wanted to be able to grow any thing with out ever worring about having enough light so this is what Kevin sold me Which i might add has been very nice with out a single bug so far...Jeff

150 tank is 72" long by 18" wide By 29" deep I have a 2-3" built up bottom since this light package was for my 125 that leaked.
The PFO housing has 2 ea on the outer ends 20K Radiums mogule base  driven by 250 watt  HQI ballest I have them on for a total of 9 hours.
The Center Light is a Usihio 10K mogule base driven by a single 250 watt HQI ballest it is on 10.5 hours the outer ends of the PFO fixture have 2 72" 160 watt 50/50 Artintics and they are on 12-13 hours The pfo fixture also hase the mogule base mounted Moon light led's that run when every thing is off I leave my Refugeium's lights on the Moon light timer..
here is a link to what it looked like when we started >>>>>

My 48" SPS / clam Tank has a pfo fixture that  I have 2 double ended 250 watt 15K Hamilton lights?? they are driven by a dual HQI Ballest as well
Also supported by 2 ea 48" 50/50 Artintics and a single moon light.

Les has asked for the same information on controlling lighting systems.  I think to help explain it all I should make it one of the topics for our club meetings and hold it at our house.  How about Feb or March depending on how far along I get the automation setup.

I will put together a parts list with suppliers and prices.

Thanks Rick I would like this very much. It would help out in the timing department a great deal!
On another note i came across these type of pendant hung metal halide fixtues for Plants & Reef tanks @ a Saltwater store in Eugene Oregon this Xmas break have any one in the club ever heard of this or seen it in use?
Check out this link it will take you to their web site but they have the bottom Light set over a 240 gallon open top reef in the store pretty awsome with mangroves growing out and every thing!!!

hey Rick, I have the directions in how to make a DIY moon light out of Blue LEDs. You can add in as many as you want into a hood and they look like moon light beams beaming into the tank. It causes shimmers through the water like MH. Absolutly gorgeous. uses almost no electricity and you can aim each one seperately.

It is like the moon light that Ed has but a million times cheaper and you can have as many as you want on your tank. I am running 10 of them on my tank right now. Super clean and super awesome looking.

Sounds like a demo project for February's meeting since you may not be at the Jan meet.  I would love to see you build one or show us how, thanks!!!

I thought about going with the blue LEDs, but didnt't think they could be dimmed, which I wanted in order to mimic the different phases of the moon.

Dou you know if the DIY plans allow for dimming the LEDs?
