April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

You should really get some sand sifting snails from amazon bay.  I was in there today and he had some.    How many hermits and snails do you have again?  What is your phosphate level?  A dead snail in a 75g tank isn't that bad.  Remember this is a hobby all about patience.

I would slow way down.  I have a feeling you have not waited long enough for your tank to aclimate.  New setup, new water, new rock, new fish, new critters, in a short amount of time all adds up to trouble.  You should not add anymore critters to your tank.  The algea in a new tank is usually a sign of an incomplete cycle, or such things as high phosphate or high nitrates.  I would just slow down and see what you have.  Nothin worse then overstocking a tank and killing these beautiful creatures..

Just my opinion

Did you know, that some tanks take as long as a year to cycle?

Did you know that some tanks go through multiple cycles?

Did you know that some tanks never seem to cycle?

Did you know that some tanks cycle so bad that everything in them die?

Did you know that some tanks barely cycle?

There are so many different things that influence cycling that we could never list them all here.

But one thing holds true, patience seems to be the best thing for tanks.

I strongly suggest you sitting back and letting this thing fix itself.

You should do water changes as much as needed to keep the amonia, nitrite and nitrates down. Other then that I would not add any more life forms until your tank settles down.

Natural reefs have taken millions of years to form, yet we think we can set up a reef tank in a few weeks and have it run successfully.

I normally suggest to people to never add anything to your tank until the 6 month mark after adding liverock. Waiting at least a year before adding corals. This is a slow process.

the old pros will probably disagree with most of this but its worth a shot

put filter floss back in your tank first of all, this will aid in mechanical filtration to decloud your water, even if this is temporary, it takes a long time for phosphates to build up on these, and on the other hand if you are trapping phospates, changing the pads frequently would remove them from your tank.  it is also possible that your water is clouded due to a bacteria/ algea bloom, this causes oygen saturatiun to go way down also, bad for tank health, make sure you have airlines connected to your powerheads this should help, get a new turkey baster , rinse with tank water and areate your sandbed with this frequently, if you are dealing with a cyano bacteria, get current down on your sand bed, cyano is a bacterial infectionnot necessarily an algae, water changes, try to pick up some macro algeas(plants) that work in tank such as halmaeda, this helps with nutrient export, so then the bacteria has to compete for its food,
if it is diatom, and your sure of it, it will go away, but adding to your bio load wont help the problem

good luck

also aqua tropics had a dionize filter that hooks up to your kitchen sink,
removes disolved solids, phospates, nitrates, ect,  for 49.00

Thanks for the advice. I am pretty bummed out right now. It seems my tank is even uglier today. I can barely see the rock. I hook the airlines to the actual powerhead?  I am really scared to try anything!!! I don't know how anything is living right now. I don't see any algae other than some green in the water itself. The brown on the sandbed and liverock does seem to almost go away when the light are off. I don't know I don't know I don't know. I am beside myself.

yes just slip the airline you bought into the hole on the top of your powerhead, this will inject a lot of air into your tank water,  trust mr this will only help your tank , this may also create a layer of bubbles on top of your tank water, if it does skim it off when ever possible, i would continue to do this until you get a skimmer. it will help somewhat to remove organic waste from the water.

did you put your filter bags back in your filter, imo i think as young as your tank is they are necessary, think of it this way 85% of your rock is dead base rock, it has had no time to develop the necessary bacteria colonies required for biological filtration, it takes a lot of time for it to tansition to live rock, using filter pads and sponges at least in the begining of a new reef will prove helpful for mechanical, and biological filtration, i would even take the small power filter from your 10 gal tank and run sponges in that for now.

What ever you do, do not give up.  Shocked This is normal for all most each and every one of us.  Cool We have all gone through this horrible phase. :?  Each just being different.

There were times when I just about threw everything in the garbage can and quit.  But I waited and worked it out.  :? and ended up having an awesome tank and a lot of experience and knowledge gained from it.

Think of this as birthing pains.  It takes awhile for a beutiful tank to be birthed out of this horrible stage. Cool  :!:

Bshane, I am going today to get more filter floss. Do I let the other end of the tube hang outside of my tank? Or does it stay in the water? Ok.....I will try anything at this point. Thanks to everyone!!! Shane, I will see you tomorrow.

just let it hang off the back of your tank it will suck air through the tube and inject it into the powerhead water flow.. many bubbles

I have extra hose if you nee it?  How long was the tank set up before you got it?  If I remember correctly you bought this tank from someone and set it up in your house right?  How much time between breakdown and set up?

I mean it is too small. It won't fit on the little knoby thing. On the other powerheads it fits in the hole.....but is too lose. Maybe I am trying to stick it somewhere I shouldn't???!! I got it from someone out of the Giant Nickle so I am not sure how long it was tore down. It had fresh water in it before I got it.
