Mid-Columbia Saltwater Aquarium Club

April meeting 4/14 @ 7PM - Grant's house

Laura and Jim will be hosting the May meeting this Saturday the 12th and it will be the usual of food, drinks, raffle and fun.

Doors will be open at 6:00 pm for social talk and the meeting will start at 7:00.  Parking gets a little tight and the city says you can't park on 4th but there is a parking lot a block away.   Meeting is usually held in the backyard so feel free to bring your favorite lawn chair, weather permitting of course.

If you need address/directions, contact a club member.

Best if you park at Mini Mall (where the spaghetti establishment use to be)

You will get to see his new frag tank set up in the making.

Hope to see you there!

Just an idea I had, maybe you all can share some input on this.
I am planning and building another large aquarium. (275 flat back hex). My thought on the water movement is, instead of installing numbers of really expensive wave making devices and such, I would install two pumps. I would plumb them so that each suction and discharge was at opposite ends of the tank. I would wire a timer so that one pump would run for about 4 hours, then a two hour low flow time period, then the other pump would run for the same amount of time. To achieve this, I think that purchasing an alternating switch of the type used in duplex air compressors would be what I want. (Automatic lead/lag relay. Every time it’s energized, it operates the other device.) The other option may be to break down and set the new tank up with the X-10 controller and then program in the alternating pumps.
The sump and fuge would be operated with a Dolphin Ampmaster 2100, the alternating currant pumps would be a pair of Dolphin Ampmaster 4000’s. (Because I already have one).
I would then need to have a separate skimmer pump. My setup at this time utilizes only one pump for the whole system. I must admit that I don’t like this setup. I always worry about losing a seal or the pump seizing while at work or on a trip.
Anyway, any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Les

Les,
I hear you changed your plan since then.   My only concern with people using larger pumps is the  Deep sand beds.   I am concerned with Sand beds being torn up by strong pumps.    If you can work around that I think you have it made.

I say ditch the DSB and the big pumps. Go with a large dump bucket/surge system.

Not to bad mouth people with dump bucket surge systems, but if I wanted the sound of a flushing toilet in my dining room, then I would install one. And maybe a big screen TV for passing the time when passing other things.
As to the latest plan, I will use the Dolphin 7500 I just purchased for the closed loop, this will run on a timer that will activate the pump for about 1 1/2 to two hours out of every 8. The timer will also activate a relay that will alternate water flow via a motorized ball valve. I plan on using the Dolphin Ampmaster 4000 I now have on the tank for the sump return pump. Am thinking at this time of also installing a valve switching assembly for alternating water flow from that pump.
The skimmer I have on order will be using a Dolphin DP900. This is the submersible Dolphin and mag drive. (I don't like mag drive but oh well)
I'm still in the decision stage on having a motorized light, though I have decided not to try to build it myself. I have found on line a store that sells these "track lights" for the greenhouse industry. I will request some info from them and make my decision at that time. Smiley

So are you going to go with a bigger tank?

After seeing Ricks new toy, I could all ready see a challenge being waged.

All Rod needs to do is set up his 300 gallon tank and I will be shopping for a new bigger tank myself.

Everytime I see the title of this thread I have a mental image of a currant floating about in the reef. . .
