I recently had a bad experience; I woke up around 5:30 one morning last week and found my aquarium pump had stopped sometime during the night. After over an hour of mucking around with it, I had to leave for work so I dropped in a power head. What I found after much pulling of hair was the pump had vapor locked. (This means that no water gets pumped) I have a large piece of egg crate in the sump situated to prevent large items from entering the impeller. This egg crate had grown hair algae so thick that it blocked the water. This blockage caused so much suction from the pump that it was sucking little whirl pools down into the suction pipe of my pump. I suspect that after a fair amount of run time the pump finally vapor locked.
I post this as a lesson for all of you out there that use remote located pumps that draw all their suction from a single source.  It seems to be prudent to inspect the piping system more often then every six months or so.

Hello Les,
Good to see you.    You are teaching me that a filter trap on the intake to external pump is a good idea.    I am glad your pump is Ok.  Thanks for the Lesson.
Your seal and My seal for our pumps are at my house.
I also have some Nori from Matt at home for you too.

I was wondering if you were alive?
joking..

Ed,
I just talked with you on Friday, so yes I'm still alive.
I can stop by one afternoon this week to get the nori if you'll be home at a reasonable hour. Let me know.
