January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

I'm a long term freshwater fishkeeping addict.  In December I decided I should learn more about saltwater fishkeeping, so I wandered down to the Kennewick library and checked out all the saltwater aquarium books- which were few.  Not feeling much better off than before, I've been doing reading online and picking some people's brains.

I am hoping to start a tank some point after tax season.  I do believe I am going to use one of my forty breeders.  I don't want to start with a huge tank but I do want to have enough room to play around.  I have a 150 watt MH pendant, an older wet/dry sump with biowheel (which I don't think I will use, I will prob. make my own out of another aquarium- would like a refugium), and several pumps.  I have overflow boxes, but I think I would prefer to have the tank plumbed, which would mean finding a local shop willing to do the glasscutting.

So, couple quick questions--

1) Recommendations on places to get holes cut for plumbing?

2) Recommendation on skimmer for 40gal breeder?  I have an ancient venturi, no model name or number.

I want to do a reef tank, with the emphasis being on the softies and easier corals until I gain more experience.  Emphasis not on fish.

Also, does anyone here QT live rock in a separate tank with peppermint shrimp for aptasia eradication?  Or do you worry about it in-tank?

Welcome!

I'll let others handle the protein skimmer question.  I use the the AquaC Remora with good results, though.

As far as QT for live rock, I deal with everything in tank when setting it up, but nothing goes in after that until it's sat in QT and been evaluated for pests.  I've dealt with way too much junk in the main tanks...

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

The Glass Nook in Richland (near Fred Meyer) and Bond & Co. glass in Kennewick are both pretty good shops to deal with.  There are also a couple members in the club with diamond bits for cutting holes.  We also have a member that builds a pretty mean air stone skimmer (which he can size to your application, cost will vary with size)...I've got one from him that will be going on the new 269 gallon tank.

Like Paul said, on initial set-up, dealing with issues in-tank has been fine.  We will be adding a QT system to deal with pests before going into the main system due to a couple pest issues we've been dealing with lately.  We will be treating before things go into the new tank this time, and then doing our best to be sure to not re-introduce anything down the road.
