January Meeting 1/14/12 @ 6PM! - OFFICER ELECTIONS!

Beau is hosting the January Meeting this coming Saturday the 14th at 6PM.  It will be BYOB as well as a snack to share and raffle items are always welcome.  It has been requested that there be “NO SHOES” on the carpet due to it being a whitish color.

He doesn’t have a tank to view but we will have plenty to discuss in hopes that it will get the NEW YEAR off to a good start.  The annual membership fees are due, so now would be a good time to get them in to our Treasurer Stacey Hahn.   Fees are $20 per individual or $25 per family

Attendance was low at the election meeting in November and no votes were taken at December’s meeting so we have decided to take votes for anyone that didn’t get the opportunity in November and will be attending this meeting.
We will add the votes to November’s ballots and the announcement will be made during the meeting so we can go forward.
NOMINATIONS:
President:  Jim & Nacho
V. President: Ed, Bo & Daniel Leigey
Treasurer: Stacey
Secretary: Carmen & Angie

Let’s hope the New Year brings new members, returning members and new ideas.  The club is always willing to take suggestions to get the most out of the hobby we all enjoy.

Please PM Nate C. by clicking here for directions if you are not a club member.

Club members can click here to go to the club member only forum to get directions.

Hope to see you all there!

There is some brown stuff on my sand. You can kind of see it in the pictures. It almost looks like some kind of algae or stuff from my live rock.

Looks like diatoms--should clear up in a few weeks, but you can siphon it off if you want.

Years ago my mother used to say to me, she'd say, "In this world, Elwood, you must be" - she always called me Elwood - "In this world, Elwood, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant." Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. You may quote me.

If it is a golden brown and just a film it is likely diatoms.  They almost always appear after a new tank setup and feed on silica which is in high concentration in new tanks and if you were to do a 100% water change or close to it.

However if they are a darker brown or even have a reddish tint with what may look like strings or filaments comming from it.  Also it will form in mats on the sand and rocks, then you have "Red Slime Algae" or Cyanobacteria.  http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/microalgae/a/aa092800.htm

To clear this up you need more water flow in the area where it is growing, and should cut back on feedings and possibly look into a better skimmer if you still can't get rid of it.

It's not a slime. It's almost like diatoms that fell of the glass and the rocks.

Here's pictures of it when there is water flow is directed at the sand.

I am getting a lot of diatoms growing on my sand and glass. Shouls I get some PhosGuard(Seachem) to control the silicates and phosphates?
